Himachal Pradesh Partners with Iceland’s Geotropy to Tap Into Geothermal Energy Potential

Taking a major stride toward its ambitious goal of transforming Himachal Pradesh into a premier Green Energy State, the state government has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with M/s Geotropy India Pvt. Ltd. (a subsidiary of Iceland-based GEOTROPY ehf.) to explore and harness the region’s vast geothermal energy reserves.
The agreement was signed in Shimla in the presence of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, and the Ambassador of Iceland to India, Benedikt Höskuldsson. The formal pact was inked by D.P. Gupta, Chief Engineer of the Directorate of Energy, representing the state government, and Tomas Otto Hansson, Chairperson of Geotropy ehf.
Reaffirming his administration’s deep commitment to sustainable development, Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted that geothermal energy presents an incredibly reliable, environment-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.
“Himachal Pradesh possesses immense geothermal potential that remains largely untapped. Unlike other renewable sources like solar or wind, a major advantage of geothermal power is its round-the-clock (24/7) availability, offering a highly stable baseload for our power grid,” the Chief Minister stated.
Chief Minister Sukhu directed Geotropy to initiate site exploration immediately to assess the state’s geothermal resources.
